In life there are times when we say to ourselves ‘enough is enough, life needs to change!’. Having that awareness of your current situation is great and is always the starting point but changing your behaviours and actions does require dedication, purpose and determination. It also requires you to consistently show up in a positive way in order to make a significant shift in your life, one that you will sustain.
There is a phrase that another great coach, Rich Litvin, regularly uses that really hits home for me and it could be the secret that will help you in your quest to make positive changes in your life. That phrase is:
“How you do anything, is how you do everything.”
The meaning behind it is that how you approach the smaller, everyday things is how you will also approach the bigger, more important challenges.
I’m sure there are times when you would rather be doing something else more exciting but you know you can’t because what you’re doing is important. That’s because how you do anything is how you do everything. Everything provides the opportunity to be or do your best with integrity.
So, how do you show up in the world on a regular basis whatever you are doing?
- Do you have a high work ethic, always wanting to do your best?
- Are you positive and optimistic?
- Are you reliable and trustworthy?
- Do you act with integrity?
- Are you determined?
- Do you take ownership of your actions and results?
- Do you care about other people?
Do you show up in this way across all the different areas of your life?
There are many other questions I could ask but am sure that’s enough to get you thinking. It is all about being in alignment with your values, beliefs and identity on a consistent basis.
So the starting point is always awareness, which is one of the most common coaching conversations I have. Be aware of how you do the smaller things – are you slapdash, always cutting corners or do you complete things to the best of your ability, always doing the right thing? As Tony Robbins would say, it is about creating and sustaining positive rituals and habits that will lead to success, not hold you back.
Tony also talks a lot about raising your standards so start small by noticing and then acting on one particular change you want to make. Gradually over time, if keep noticing and doing things differently you’ll be amazed how you start to change the way you do EVERYTHING.
